In an email sent to members of the North Allegheny Unified Boosters Organization (UBO) last week, school board candidate Bruce Martindale urged members to support his stance on the the North Allegheny Athletics program stating that the current board does not “embrace” the “importance of athletics.”  The email, dated Wednesday, May 10, 2017 read as follows:

Date: May 10, 2017 at 12:47:54 PM EDT
Subject: Upcoming Election Tuesday May 16, 2017

UBO Representatives:

My name is Bruce Martindale and I am the representative for Girl’s Basketball and Softball on the UBO board and I am running for the North Allegheny School Board in the upcoming election.  I have two children (Garrett and Rachel) in the school district, one at NASH and the other at NAI.  I believe athletics has given both my children opportunities to learn lessons that will help them in life that the classroom can not duplicate.  Unfortunately I do not feel as though the importance of athletics is being embraced by our current administration.  Many of our children have been blessed with special gifts, some in music, perhaps art or dance, and for other it is athletics.  We need to make sure that we have the coaches and facilities in place to allow those gifts to grow just as North Allegheny does in other areas.

I am not a single issue individual and also care greatly about the education our children are receiving.  I believe every effort should be made to have the most qualified teachers in the classroom and not just those that graduate college with a high GPA.  We also have to make sure that we are spending the money collected through our real estate taxes as effectively and efficiently as possible.  To often administrators believe that throwing money at a problem or challenge is going to fix the issue.  Problems are usually solved through innovative thinking and having the correct priorities.  I would very much appreciate your support in the upcoming election on May 16th, 2017. If you could pass this email on to your respective teams, I would be very thankful.

Thank you,

Bruce Martindale

Although Martindale cites the current “Administration” for not “embracing” the importance of athletics, it was the School Board who twice turned down a proposal for the addition of concession stands and restrooms at the North Allegheny baseball/softball fields, a proposal which Martindale likely supports.

Martindale’s email plea to sports boosters has resulted in at least one complaint to the district Superintendent, citing possible ethics violations.

  1. WOW. Seriously? North Allegheny doesn’t take athletics seriously? They take it TOO SERIOUSLY. The amount of money this district spends on sports is ridiculous. They want to cut music programs, but by god we have a 1/2 million dollar scoreboard and new turf!!

    Pathetic and unethical.
