Allegheny County Lifeguard Aquatics Testing at NASH

Hosted by Allegheny County Parks, a Lifeguard Aquatics Test will be held on Saturday, May 5, 2018 from 3 pm to 9 pm at North Allegheny Senior High School.

What is the Aquatics Test?

  • The Aquatics Test consists of seven timed water tests.
  • The test is divided into stations; you may start at any station.
  • There is a minimum time in each test to pass.
  • You must be age 16 and over.
  • You may retake any test that you feel you could do better at, but only on the day of the test.

You MUST bring the following items to the test with you or you will not be able to take the test.  The forms are found on Lifeguard Employment Forms.

  1. Completed Doctor’s Certification Form
  2. Completed County Seasonal Employment Application Form (both pages)
  3. Completed Voluntary EEO Form (for age requirement verification)
  4. Bathing suit and towel

Test Dates and Times

Location: North Allegheny High School

  • Saturday, May 5 ~ 3:00pm – 9:00pm
    Saturday, May 19 ~ 3:00pm – 9:00pm

7 Aquatics Tests

No goggles will be permitted during the tests except for the 500-yds. free style. If you wear contacts, please bring a case.

Test One
50 yards free style (passing time: 33.5)

Test Two
500 yards free style (10:00)

Test Three
25 yards underwater swim using either a breaststroke or flutter kick (legs only). You may take only one pull with your arms. This may be taken at the beginning, in the middle, or at the end. (pass/fail)

Test Four
Recovery of a 10 pound object in 12 feet of water, with a 30 foot approach. The candidate will start in the water and, on a signal from the tester, will swim out and dive down to the 10 pound object. With both hands on the object, the candidate will push off the bottom. The timer will stop when the object breaks the surface of the water. (10.5)

Test Five
2 minute water tread with a 10 pound object. Both hands must remain on the object at all times. (pass/fail)

Test Six
The candidate starts in the water and the 10 pound object starts on the wall.
Tow a 10 pound object 50 yards with an inverted breaststroke kick or a flutter kick. The candidate swims on their back with both hands on the 10 pound object. (1:20)

Test Seven
The candidate starts in the water and the 10 pound object starts on the wall.
Tow a 10 pound object 50 yards sidestroke. The candidate places the 10 pound object on a hip to swim; may use free arm to pull. (1:10)
